# Trash and recycling

> Pickup is Wednesday, trash and recycling both weekly, carts at the curb by 6 AM. A holiday moves pickup back one day.

Trash and recycling are managed through the City of Carmel utilities and billed with each resident's water and sewer bill. The vendor is Republic Services of Indiana. Republic-provided containers must be used.

## When

- Pickup is **Wednesday**. Trash and recycling are both weekly.
- Containers must be at the curb by **6 AM** on collection day. Please do not put trash out before dark on Tuesday.
- If a holiday falls on or before pickup day that week, pickup moves back one day. Holidays observed in Hamilton County: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

## Trash

Not accepted: construction or demolition materials, and combustible liquids or chemicals such as motor oil, paint, gasoline and hot ashes. Tree and shrub clippings must be cut and bundled in lengths of 4 feet or less.

## Recycling (95-gallon containers)

- Place items loose in the container with the lid closed. Do not bag recycling, because a bagged load is sent to the landfill. No sorting is needed.
- Rinse cans and bottles; labels are fine. Flatten plastic milk and soda bottles. Place newspapers in a paper bag or bundle them.
- Accepted: plastics #1 to #5 and #7 (all empty), glass bottles and jars, clean aluminum foil and metal cans, newspapers and inserts, magazines and phone books, corrugated cardboard, paperboard and boxboard, soft-cover books, office and school paper, and brown paper bags.
- Not accepted: Styrofoam (including #6), expanded foam, plastic film, sheets and wraps, black plastic, window glass, dinnerware, ceramics, mirrors, light bulbs, nursery plant containers, plastic buckets and crates, toys, microwave food trays, clamshells, wax-coated cardboard (including milk cartons), food-soiled paper, shredded paper, blueprints, carbon paper, hardback books, and motor oil, insecticide or other hazardous chemical containers.
